Climbing Adventure for Kids at UC Santa Barbara ~ August 6-24, 2012

Written by Vapur Pro Team member, Laura Bylund

The Vapur Anti-Bottle’s colorful presence graced the Climbing Adventure for Kids this August at UC Santa Barbara.  This 3-week climbing camp serviced over 40 young climbers of all skill levels between the ages of 6 and 13 years.  Vapur was there each of the three weeks keeping them hydrated and fit for climbing through the summer heat.

The climbers learned the ever important skills of how to conduct a thorough safety check before leaving the ground and how to communicate so they can focus on their movement on the wall.  They engaged in a multitude of exercises to help them move up in climbing grade, with much focus on the most important thing and what is often forgotten in good climbing, their feet!

The kids learned the proper orientation for placing their toes on the wall, how to effectively grip climbing holds, techniques for best preserving strength and energy and shifting their weight for lateral movement.  They put these new skills to the test while bouldering, traversing through hula hoops, playing wall twister and braving their project route on the high wall.

“This was the most successful year by far,” said Luke Hetzel, the camp’s founding Lead Instructor. “It feels we have finally been established as a reputable and desirable kids camp and having a company like Vapur provide a quality product for everyone made it feel even more official.”

Many of the kids had their light weight Anti-Bottles conveniently hanging from their shorts or harnesses while traversing or going up the 30 foot sections.  With all of this exhausting climbing activity, it was good to have Vapur kids water bottles there as a bright and accessible reminder to keep drinking water.

It was all the more fitting to promote an environmentally friendly product in the first ever LEED certified recreation center, 100% powered by 816 photovoltaic solar panels on its tall roof, the UCSB Multi-Activity Center.

“It was a lot of fun, ” Hetzel said, “and was really special to be able give the kids a useful and sustainable gift.”

Vapur Pro Team member, Laura Bylund, in coordination with Vapur, made a contribution of Anti-Bottles to the kids involved with the camp.

The Quenchers are our first series of do-it-yourself Anti-Bottles designed for kids and kids at heart. In a consumer-driven world, we felt that kids were the answer to finally dumping the disposable water bottle habit. The Quenchers became a kid-focused extension of the Vapur mission to make drinking good ole fashioned water easy, sustainable and fun! But in order to create the Quenchers, we had to get in touch with our inner child.

The goal was to ultimately develop a product that kids would love and that would help keep them hydrated while encouraging the use of reusable water bottles. With the Vapur Creative Team (Jason Carignan, Frez Ferrino, Grant England & Jenny Guy), coupled with the unique stylings of Mike Kunkel, a cartoonist with 20+ years of experience at studios like Warner Bros, Nickelodeon and Disney, the work began to bring the Quenchers to life.

After about a year of designing, prototyping, character development and kid-input, Bo, Lolli, Fuse and Splash (the Quenchers) arrived in the form of Vapur’s first customizable Anti-Bottles.

Now, these four lovable characters are on a mission to keep kids everywhere happy, healthy and hydrated while giving waste the boot! True to all Anti-Bottles, they’re proudly made in the United States, dishwasher safe, BPA-free and reusable. Each Quencher Anti-Bottle comes with three sticker sheets of facial features and add-ons, so little ones can create a hydration companion that’s uniquely their own. “Since its launch, Vapur has always been a brand guided by innovation, design and fun,” says Vapur Marketing Manager, Jenny Guy. “We wanted to develop a product that kids would absolutely love and that would not only help keep them healthy and hydrated, but also would educate them on the importance of using a reusable bottle.”

With type two diabetes and childhood obesity on the rise, it is more critical than ever for kids to establish healthy habits like drinking water.  According to NaturalNews.com, drinking water instead of sugary drinks can eliminate an average of 235 excess calories per day among children and adolescents.  By helping to cut out the empty, sugary calories and by replacing them with water, Vapur aims to curb these epidemics. The Quenchers were created to reach out to kids in a way that makes staying healthy in a sustainable way, trendy.

Accompanying the Quencher Anti-Bottle launch is also the release of Vapur’s online Quencher game. Kids (and kids at heart) can visit www.VapurQuenchers.com, create a Quencher and share their designs with friends. This website also includes a gallery of designs, character bios, wallpapers and coloring pages available for download.

Last week, the Vapur Team headed out to Salt Lake City, Utah for the Outdoor Retailer Summer Market, ORSM, to promote hydration and talk gear with a bunch of outdoor enthusiasts.

This motley crew included Vapur’s hard working co-founders, David Czerwinski, Brent Reinke and Jason Carignan, National Sales Director, Ashley Doran, Marketing Manager, Jenny Guy (me!) and Creative Director, Frez Ferrino.

ORSM started on August 1 with a Preview/Open Air Demo Day, including stand up paddle board and kayak demonstrations and… a Sierra Nevada beer tent! The day continued on with Brent and Ashley giving out 1L Vapur Elements to GOA members at the Grassroots Outdoor Alliance dinner, while Jason and I rubbed elbows with the writers and editors of sport and outdoor publications at a Speak EZ Media Suite hosted by Verde PR.

Each day of the show, the Vapur Team handed out 1,000 Anti-Bottles to show-goers at the four Vapur-sponsored hydration stations in the Trade Hall and New Exhibitor Pavilion. Vapur partnered with Event Water Solutions to bring these stations to ORSM and to help cool attendees down in the Utah Summer heat. With lines of people waiting at these stations, the Team managed to blow through 1,000 bottles in about 30 minutes everyday of the show.

To meet demand and to (do what Vapur loves to do) support a good cause, each day the Team also sold 1L Elements in the Vapur booth with all the funds going to the Conservation Alliance.

Friday of ORSM, Vapur held a massive booth party made complete with the infamous DJ Knucklz and two kegs of FREE beer. Anti-Bottles were also given to all who showed up to get down with the Vapur Team.

Needless to say, we had a great time! In 2009, Vapur set out to kick the disposable bottle habit and keep the world hydrated. With a calculated 23,270 disposable bottles saved from landfills that week, we did exactly that as the Mobile Hydration Sponsor at ORSM.  Some of the highlights from OR week include: dinner with Verde PR, lunch with Polar Explorer Eric Larsen, chatting new products with partners, participating in the ORSM Ragnar Relay and talking with great buyers, media and our lovely outdoor reps!

We’re looking forward to seeing you at Outdoor Retailer Winter Market!

Happy hydrating,

Jenny & the Team

The Vapur Team went all out for Independence Day this year! Our flagship product, the Anti-Bottle is made in the USA and the 4th of July is one of our most celebrated holidays.

Each year, we spice up our holiday parties up with a theme. This year the theme was “American Spirit on a Stick.” This meant that all of the food items that the Team brought to the party had to be on a stick or stick-related!

Ashley Doran, Vapur’s National Sales Director, joked, “The American flag is on a stick and the Vapur Team loves food on a stick, so having a stick theme for our 4th of July party seemed like the most logical idea!”

The menu included:
– Breakfast Dogs on Sticks (sausages wrapped in a pancakes)
– Corn Dogs (and Vegetarian Corn Dogs)
– Fruit Kabobs
– Wedge Salad on a Stick
– Veggie Kabobs
– Corn on the Cobb on a Stick
– Mozzarella Sticks
– Bread Sticks
– Pretzel Sticks

Dessert:
– Popsicles
– Lollipops
– A specialty American flag made of cake pops

We hope you all enjoy this 4th of July holiday as much as the Vapur Team! Celebrate your independence from disposable water bottles with the reusable, made in the USA Vapur Anti-Bottle.
